Yr4 Curriculum Update – 13/10/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

Welcome back!

Since our last update, the students have had a great break and returned to school refreshed and ready to start our new unit. Your child may have already begun to engage with the new and exciting unit of inquiry which is all about communication, signs and symbols. We have begun our work by analysing our central idea: ‘People create systems to help them communicate’. The children have shown great enthusiasm so far and it looks as though we have a fun and engaging unit ahead of us!

The last week of term we went for a walk to look for evidence of signs and symbols in the community.  Our final destination was the playground where the children thoroughly enjoyed an opportunity for some creative play.

In language we have used our analysis skills to look at non-chronological reports, identifying the purpose and intended audience, the language features that are used e.g.technical vocabulary and how they are organised and structured. We will apply this knowledge in a reading of a range of non-fiction texts to supplement our skills and eventually create our own non-chronological reports.

In Maths we have begun looking at addition and subtraction methods. We will be studying the various ways in which students can mentally add and subtract. In addition, we will be expanding their familiarity with the written procedures involved in solving these problems. We will also be using and applying our estimation strategies in order to check whether our answers are accurate.

Students in Year Four have had experience in exploring and experimenting with a variety of art materials and media over the last five weeks.  This week each student experimented and used their knowledge of watercolour techniques to create an abstract piece of art. They are now planning to produce art that is personal and is a reflection of a successful learner.

How you can help at home

Discuss the different communication systems you use at home and at work. When you are out and about with your child encourage them to spot different ways people are communicating. Can they make a visual record of what they have noticed?

A date for your diaries:

Parent-Teacher Consultations are coming up at the beginning of November – 2.11.’17 and 9.11.’17. More information will be in the School Newsletter about when and how you can book an appointment.

Remember if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s learning and wellbeing at school please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance

Kind Regards
