Yr5 Curriculum Update – 26/01/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Our  Transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry: How the World Works

“Matter exists in different forms which can be changed and used for different purposes”

We wrapped up our unit this week with some fantastic science investigations and demonstrations designed by the students. Lots of great practical examples of physical and chemical changes. We designed the inquiries using the ‘scientific method’ paying attention to the different variables and controls necessary. Please look at the Unit Reports for some evidence of your child’s learning.

Our unit on Multiplication and Division is also drawing to an end. We have been making the connections between the different operations as well as between visual and numerical representations of amounts. The notation for division is something lots of children find confusing to begin with and it really helps to give them ways to make their thinking visible, either drawing arrays or using physical objects like counters.

We have been reading with a question in mind to help our reading comprehension. This is a great strategy for research as well as understanding the plot of narrative writing.

I know the children will be feeling inspired by all of the science experiments and demonstrations they have seen. Everything we have done in school can be repeated in the kitchen, so have some fun with science to consolidate the learning in this unit!
