Yr5 Weekly Update – 03/10/17

Central Idea: Matter exists in different forms which can be changed and used for different purposes

UOI

Our ‘How the World Works’ unit culminated this week in an array of scientific spectacles. There were intrigued faces, liquids measured, temperatures read, solids dissolved and observations charted. We are excited to be sharing what we found out with our peers very soon and sharing the science behind our investigation and changes in matter. It’s about now that we reflect upon our learning throughout this unit. How did our observation skills improve? What do we now understand about interpreting and how can we continue to improve this skill? How was I curious? When did I show being an inquirer? Do I understand how to make a fair test?

English

A mixture of a week this week, as we have been finalising our unit and the explanation writing involved with this. We were challenged to use what we know about explanation texts and apply these features when designing an explanation poster, sketchnote or flowchart. The purpose of this was to explain the science behind our summative assessment science investigation. To get our creative juices flowing we have also begun a unit on poetry. We have started by being immersed in a wide range of poems from limericks, haikus, cinquains, diamantes and narrative to name a few. Whilst browsing through these we have been considering what is our opinion of these poems? Who might they have been written for? And what are their main themes. We are very much looking forward to discovering some favourite poems in poet of the day, see home learning below for details.

Maths

We have been inquiring into division this week by posing a couple of open ended problems involving division. This has given us a great insight into what the we already know about division. For example, how it is related to multiplication, how we can solve division using written strategies and what we understand about the concept of division. Next week we will be consolidating some written and mental strategies to divide which will continue to help us when problem solving. There are also some preparations underway for maths week next week.

We are tasked with creating a mathematical game for when year 6 visit us on Wednesday, another authentic opportunity to practise writing instructions. We then look forward to reciprocating by visiting the year 6 to play the games they have devised next Thursday. A reminder to dust down your costumes and dress up mathematically on Tuesday 14th March, ‘pi’ day!

Homelearning:

  • 20 minutes of daily reading
  • Continue to use Mathletics to practise fractions and measure.
  • Poet of the day: As part of this poetry unit we would like each student to have an opportunity to read and recite a poem in front of their peers. Each child can sign up to be the “Poet of the Day”. They will be responsible to either write an original poem or find a poem that they enjoy to read aloud to the class. The students should also be prepared to share with the class why they have selected or written that poem. Please help support your child by allowing them opportunities to recite their poem at home in front of an audience.
