Yr5 Weekly Update – 05/19/17

Producers and consumers play interdependent roles in the economic system

Unit of inquiry

This week, students have been trying to define what a system is and learnt that systems come in many forms and are made up of components that rely on each other to work successfully. Students identified the people/ components in a business/ economic system and drew diagrams to show how these components rely on each other to function properly. In addition to this, some students learnt about the concept of supply and demand and what makes a product or service successful. Others carried out another thinking routine to help them redesign a product or service and then carried out market research to find out how successful their redesigned product or service was likely to be.

Maths

Year 5 continued with their work on decimals. In addition to this, students were introduced to spreadsheets and were shown how to use formulae to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Students reinforced their understanding by solving various problems using their new-found skills.

English

The children continued to work on their narrative writing skills, giving ‘voice’ to their characters by describing their actions rather than saying how they felt. Students also worked on their summarising skills.

Year 5 Market Day Preparations

For the majority of students, Market Day is the highlight of their year. This year, the event will take place on June 21st and parents are cordially invited to come along and see their children’s efforts from 9-10am. Please note that the children will NOT be selling their products at this time. This will be an opportunity for your child to talk to you about their business venture. We hope to see many of you there.

Next week, students will be getting into groups and coming up with an idea for a product they would like to make and sell and will be expected to come up with a prototype. Can we please ask that parents refrain from helping their children and instead, encourage them to use their problem-solving skills to overcome any difficulties they may encounter? The expectation is that the members within a group will help and support each other- please foster this idea of team-spirit within your child.

Art lessons with Mr. MacArthur

For the last three weeks and next week as well it is the Year Five students turn to have a special art lesson with Mr. MacArthur. The students have enjoyed developing various techniques using different media such as pastels, watercolours and this week, charcoal.
