KJS Principal Appointment

I am very pleased to be able to confirm that we have four shortlisted candidates attending KJS as part of the final selection process for Principal next week.  On Wednesday 22nd March they will be in school for the whole day and be interviewed by a variety of different stakeholder panels.  At 5.00pm on that day they will each make a 20 mins presentation to the wider school community in the school hall followed by a 10 mins question and answer session.  A short written profile of each candidate will be provided at the start of the evening.  You are most welcome to attend these presentations if you would like to participate in the selection process.   To enable us to manage numbers please sign up on https://goo.gl/forms/JhAUAJfu9tYqPHJC2.  We expect them to be concluded at 7.00pm.   You will be able to give feedback on the presentations until 7.00am the next morning.  On Thursday 23rd March the final formal interviews will take place in ESF Centre and we hope that an announcement will be possible before the end of term.   Many thanks for your continuing support through this vital process.

Best wishes,

Dr Ed Wickins

Executive Principal of the ESF Kowloon Learning Campus

(King George V School, Kowloon Junior School, Jockey Club Sarah Roe School)

Dear All,

Welcome to Maths Week! Dress up day is tomorrow and the teachers have been busy deciding what to wear tomorrow – I can’t wait to see what the children will be wearing. I’ll post some photographs on the KJS Facebook page in the morning so you can see some of the highlights.  I know some families have been busy preparing a video for the ‘Maths in the Real World’ competition. Please drop your 30 second videos into the google folder with this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B3tm2oJxZ5kVUWhBbmdORkt4bE0?usp=sharing

On Saturday our team of runners made their way to Discovery Bay to race against 14 other international schools for our main running event of the season. We had representatives from Years 4, 5 and 6. Everyone competed very well and gave their all over the 2 and 3 km courses. Although exhausted everyone was all smiles at the end and all competitors could reflect on a job well done!

With only a few days left until the School Fair excitement is at fever pitch. We have chosen the performers for the Talent Show – the standard was high and it was extremely difficult to choose because we loved them all.  The notifications have already been sent out to parents of children who will be performing. Further details about the fair can be found later in this newsletter.

I have noticed that some children are trying to buy sweets from the stall outside school before they get on the bus at the end of the school day. The children are not allowed to do this and I would be extremely grateful if you would take the time to remind them. On a similar issue, sweets/candies are not allowed in school.  Many thanks for your cooperation.

Thank you to everyone who has already sent in materials for the “Ziploc Challenge”. We will continue to make a wonderful collection for the children to use and explore. To meet the challenge children need to fill a large ziploc bag with items that can be used to design, make, create and tinker with. As you know, we are looking to collect:

● broken toys (that can be taken apart)

● broken electronics (phones, computers, electronic games)

● lego pieces that need a home

● fabric (or any textiles)

● wire

● rope

● thread

● cardboard (larger pieces would be better)

● cereal boxes ● egg cartons ● paper towel rolls ● corks ● masking tape ● bottle caps ● aluminium foil ● velcro ● beads ● bobbins ● tiles ● wallpaper ● wrapping paper ● different types of pipes ● nails ● screws ● gears ● scrap wood ● popsicle sticks

Please send your donations in anytime and drop them in the bins just outside the office.

I look forward to seeing you in school very soon – and at the fair on Saturday!

Wishing you a wonderful week.

KJS World Fair (Saturday, 18 March)

  • Great games, food, activities, variety show, sports. All in a good cause!
  • Buy your coupons in advance and get discounts!
  • Your help is needed. Please volunteer!
  • Last chance to buy (and use) discontinued uniforms. Sale at discounted prices!
  • Help us uphold the values of our school! Recyclable plates and cutlery at the School Fair.

We are all looking forward to the KJS School Fair next Saturday, 18th March. There will be 17 external vendors selling books, toys, jewelry, organic cotton knitwear, snacks and health products, as well as your donated items, books and DVDs for the white elephant stall.

In addition, we have a World Fair of fun games and food, giant slide, bouncy castle, bungee run, giant darts, shoot the ducks, NBA challenge, Hercules challenge, face painting, nail decoration, hair spray, crafts, and skills and games from the Kowloon Cobras, our local Australian Rules football team.

Thank you for those who have volunteered to help at the School Fair.  We are still urgently looking for 15-20 more volunteers on the day between 2:30pm – 5pm for various stalls.  Please contact pta@kjs.edu.hk if you can help out.

A copy of the School Fair booklet will be sent home with your children this week.  You will find all the information you need to know including details of the performances schedule, floor plan, raffle and auction items, and vendors in the KJS Bazaar.

We are having a clearance sale of school uniform items at discounts of up to 80% off. These items have been discontinued but can still be worn at school, including brushed cotton polo shirts, PE track pants, summer shirts, trousers, jackets and many more items! Please come to the School Hall on 1/F for these great bargains!

We had our first community choir rehearsal last week and it was lot of fun.  Don’t miss our opening number on stage at 11:30am.

Remember you can order your coupons in advance for the School Fair, to avoid queues on the day. Buy before noon on Friday 17 March, and get an additional $20 of tickets for every purchase of $200.

Please collect a game pass at the PTA counter when you arrive at the School Fair.  You can collect stamps after each game you play, and redeem them for prizes at the Prizes Counter.

In keeping with our school’s focus on the environment, please bring your own shopping bags to the School Fair for any items you purchase.  We will also have recycling bins for paper and plastic used at the School Fair. Please purchase a recyclable plate and cutlery ($10) at the tableware counter for use at the International food fair.  We encourage you to reuse the tableware during the event.

You may take plates and cutlery home at the end of the day or donate them to the PTA by simply dropping them off at the designated recycling box.  Items recycled will be used at future PTA events such as the quiz night, disco and next year’s School Fair.   We apologize for any inconvenience but hope you will support these moves to increase the environmental awareness of all of our children.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at the KJS School Fair!

Y6 Parent Invitation

Y6 parents are invited to a coffee morning at 8.45 on 20th March to learn more about the upcoming PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition is the culmination of the six years that the children have spent working within the PYP framework and is an extremely important process.  As we know some parents will be unable to attend we will make sure the key points from the presentation are shared with you.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Well done to Hayley, Jamie and Jayden who participated at the Hong Kong Girl Guides Centenary Challenge Cup on March 5th. They all received medals for completing the race!

What a lovely surprised to read that Vera and Yash were featured as Junior Tennis Hot Shots this month in the KCC Magazine!

A few months ago I was contacted by Hannah and her Mum Stephanie who were looking for KJS gymnasts to form a team to compete in competitions and represent KJS.  Mythili, Abby, Sian and Hannah were very proud to represent their school at the event – wearing their matching leotards they really looked the part. Despite not knowing each other before the competition the girls demonstrated excellent collaborative team skills, helping each other out and encouraging each other throughout the competition. They did their best and performed well in a competition that didn’t end until 9pm. I am so pleased that Hannah’s dream became a reality and can’t wait to see what they achieve next! Well done everyone.

Congratulations to Ethan for his fourth place in a piano competition on Friday – we are proud of you!

I was very happy to receive this lovely poem from Sophie yesterday afternoon. Inspired when playing with her little brother Ethan, she penned this poem which I would like to share:

Turtles

Burrow, burrow,

Deep into the sand.

Burrow, burrow,

Across the land.

“Hurry!”

Says the mother turtle.

Be quick! Come out!

All your little friends

are out and about.

Burrow, burrow,

Deep into the sand.

Burrow, burrow,

Across the land.

Little tiny sand turtles,

They hatch on the beach.

Then they head out to sea,

That’s just out of reach!

Burrow, burrow,

Deep into the sand.

Burrow, burrow,

Across the land.

Congratulations to Brandon for his participation at the rugby tournament at Sandy Bay’s Valley Fort RFC Mini Rugby Festival last month. Rain or shine, Brandon and his team have been training hard every Sunday morning. They have learned about team work, roles and responsibilities when working together and sportsmanship.

Finally, great news for the Mishra family in HSS Sports day last week!

Urvi Mishra: Gold medal in long jump

Atharva Mishra: Won in team games

Mum and Dad: Bronze medal in couples race.

Grandfather: Silver medal in 100 km running race (photo finish!)

What a wonderful family story!
