Acting Principal’s Message

Dear KJS Families,

On Tuesday, we had our first group of Y2 parents on-campus to experience play-based learning with their children. As you may recall, we offered the same opportunity to Y1 families over a number of weeks, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Play-based learning is a constructivist approach to learning, whereby students learn through active and playful engagement with the world around them. Unstructured play is one valid strand of play-based learning, however there are other strands that can be effectively supported by teachers and adults. The key, of course, is to ensure that we preserve the core play element that fosters understanding through exploration and discovery.

From Thursday this week, students will return to eating their lunches in classrooms. This change will not affect the school timetable at this stage. A short review of the school schedule in light of this change will be carried out in early December and any changes will be implemented in January.

As recently mentioned, our PTA is working hard to support us in being able to provide an external lunch provider option to KJS families from 9/1. I appreciate that this has been a long time coming so details will be shared as soon as possible.

Triple P Parent Programme

Dear Parents,

We will be holding two Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme) seminars by Zoom. We successfully ran these sessions last year and you are welcome to attend again should you wish to; please note the content is the same.  This is an Australian internationally acclaimed program and will be facilitated by Carolyn Aukafolau from our Learning Enhancement Team.  At KJS we value the partnership that we have with parents and how we can develop this not only to support the wellbeing of students but also you, our parent community.

The seminars are

  • Positive Parenting – Thursday 1st December 1:00pm – 1:45pm
  • Raising Confident, Competent Children – Thursday 8th December 1:00pm – 1:45pm

The seminars suggest strategies to promote positive, caring relationships between parents and children which help to develop effective management strategies for dealing with a variety of common developmental issues and childhood behavioural concerns.  You will get the opportunity to enhance your knowledge skills and confidence to support your child in a variety of ways and you will learn how to use positive parenting strategies to encourage children to learn the skills and competencies they need to promote their health, development and wellbeing.  This aligns with many of the IB learner profiles which are our school values.

Positive Parenting – 1 Dec 2022 (1:00pm to 1:45pm)

KJS ATHLETICS DAYS ARE BACK!

Athletics days are back! After 3 years we are once again able to offer our students the chance to showcase their athletics skills off site at Perth Street Sports Ground.

Year 3 (9-11am) and year 4 (12-2pm) on Tuesday, December 13th

Year 5 (9-11am) and year 6 (12-2pm) on Wednesday, December 14th.

Students will need to come to school in their PE kit with their water bottle and an easy to eat, healthy snack (no sweets or sugary drinks please).

Whilst this is great news for the students unfortunately due to restrictions on numbers at the venue; this year we will not be able to have parent spectators.

Our year 1 and 2 students will have their own athletics days after the Christmas break.
