Yr2 Curriculum Update – 12/04/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to the 14th edition!

Sharing the Planet: “Plants sustain life on Earth and play a role in our lives”

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

On the trip to the flower market we had to ask the shopkeepers questions to learn more about the plants we were buying. After our trip to the flower market, the children had to decide where to place the plant they had bought. They had to use the information they had got from the shop keepers about how much water and sunlight the plant needed to help them make their decision.

Ask your child:

Where did you choose to place your plant?

Why did you choose to place it there?

How are you showing responsibility to look after it?

We have now come to the end of our unit finding out and investigating plants. The children have really enjoyed it and have learnt lots of new information. Please look out for their videos on evidencer after the Easter holidays. You will receive an email to notify you that their videos and report are ready to view.

Literacy

The children have been looking at instructions. They have been finding out how we organise instructions and the words we choose to use to make them easier to follow. The children investigated lots of different types of instructions and created a success criteria as a class. The children also made fruit kebabs to help them build and adapt their success criteria further.

Maths

In Maths the children have been continuing looking at subtraction, fractions and mass and capacity.

The children have been thinking about the different strategies they can use to subtract and the links they can see with addition. They have been finding out whether they can use any of their addition learning to help them subtract.

The children have started to think about halves and quarters. They have been thinking about what they are and how they can show halves and quarters of objects.

Ask your child:

What strategy can you use to subtract?

What would half of ____ be?

What would a quarter of ____ be?

Chinese

Year 2 children continue their inquiry into nature and plants. They continue to explore the role of plants and how to take care of them. Connections to learning are made using Chinese stories, songs, rhymes and games.

Here’s a glimpse of the happenings in some of our classrooms:

Student Led Conferences

This week the children had the chance to show you and talk about their learning. It was great to see parents and children so excited about the learning that has been going on in Year 2. The children were confident talking about their learning and parents were asking questions to understand more.

Sports Day

Year 2 had a great time at sports day on Wednesday. We worked as a team and were enthusiastic throughout. It really reflected the elarning the children have been doing in the Who We Are unit throughout the unit. We enjoyed spending time with so many of our parents- thanks for coming!

Suggestions for Supporting Learning at Home

We will be starting our new unit after the holidays looking at our personal histories. Over the holidays if you could collect photos and artefacts about the children’s and your families histories, it will come in really useful for our unit.
