Yr4 Weekly Update – 26/8/16

General

We have continued to get to know each other this week through a range of rich tasks this week. Mr McArthur has delivered the first in a series of lessons on colour in Art to all the Year 4 classes. Class routines and essential agreements are now established and children should be feeling well settled in to their new classrooms.

Lit

This week have we have been listening to our inner voice in our reading sessions. Being able to create theories, make connections and ask questions really help readers to engage with and understand the text more deeply. Their ‘footprints’ help them to remember what has happened.

Classes have also begun to write personal journals which will be a focus of our upcoming unit of inquiry.

Maths

We have continued to work on place value this week. Children have practiced expanding numbers into their place values as well as beginning to round numbers to a specified place value. Mental maths maintenance has continued to revise number facts and times tables through a series of games and short investigations.

Home Learning

This week, please help your child re-establish their home reading routine. It is essential that every student read everyday in order to practice and embed the strategies and skills they are learning in school. Sharing reading is a really good way of engaging and enthusing young readers. Why not encourage your child to choose a book from the school library for you to read to them?

Children in Year 4 should be doing 15 – 20 minutes of reading each evening and discussing the text, preferably with an adult. Children should also write a one line reflection comment in their diary.
