Yr6 Curriculum Update – 24/05/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Year 6 Team

Welcome to the 16th edition of our Year 6 Curriculum Update!

In each update, you will be able to see glimpses of the learning journey that our students have been involved in over the previous two weeks. Our Learning Journey is written by teachers and students.

We are in Week 2 of exhibition and our Year 6 classrooms and shared area have been buzzing with the excitement. Students have begun meetings with their coaches and embarked on their learning journey by creating a success criteria for a successful exhibition. During the PYP Exhibition our Year 6 students will take action in response to their inquiries or motivation to make a positive difference. This year we would like to request all our Year 6  parents to support their children with taking action throughout their inquiry. Here is the parent letter that outlines how you can best support your child in this year’s PYP Exhibition.

PYP Exhibition – It’s all connected!

WEEK 1: All classes have begun the process of Y6 Exhibition. Students have chosen a passion connected to at least one of the Global Goals. They are beginning the research process and will present their research findings on the Y6 Exhibition Showcase night. We have chosen groups according to our deepest passions. We have created a success criteria for a successful exhibition, which is as follows:

WEEK 2: Classes have begun to research and speak with their coaches about what they plan to do for Y6 Exhibition. Students have created their own key concept questions for the unit that will drive their research and personal inquiries.

In Maths, classes as been learning fractions and the concept of equivalence. We have been learning about and applying our estimation skills. Other classes have been working on percentages and fractions and how are they connected.  Some classes have also been learning about fractions by working out different problems. This deepens their fraction understandings by using visuals and tables to understand different concepts.

In Mandarin, some classes have been doing Personal Inquiries, and preparing presentations to share with their classmates. They can work in groups for this task and it helps boost collaboration, creativity, and brainstorming skills.

In PE, some classes have been participating in an endball tournament against different teams, in both their own class and from different classes. Endball is a game which requires teamwork and encourages teammates and peers to coach each other and help each other improve.

In Music, some classes have been learning to write their own music pieces on a variety of different apps and applications, like MuseScore and LMMS. Writing music pieces requires creativity and a basic understanding of music theory, which will help us in other music activities.
