Yr6 Weekly Update – 03/03/17

Where We are in Place and Time

UNIT OF INQUIRY

We are continuing to work on our Historical Narratives ensuring that we are using our historical facts we gained from our Kowloon Walled City Park field trip as well as some documentaries we have been watching in class.

Some classes have put together their KWC data in a poster format in order to summarize all of the information they gained on the trip.

Students will need to include part of the information from the trip and all of the features of a narrative, which include the following:

Orientation or setting which gives the background to the story

An element of suspense introduced by a complication or a problem.

It has a resolution which tells how the main character or characters confront the problem and resolve it.

Here are is a visual of what we will be focusing on in the coming week.

MATHS

For maths we are wrapping up with fractions and moving towards Shape and Space. We are going to be focusing on visualizing two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects.

It is important for students to be able to do this for several reasons. When students work with numbers, they use a different area of the brain than when they work with visual and spatial information, such as an array of dots.  Researchers have found that mathematics learning was increased when the two areas of the brain were communicating (Park & Brannon, 2013). Additionally, they found that training students through visual representations improved students’ math performance significantly, even on numerical math, and that the visual training helped students more than numerical training. We will be looking at different ways to improve students visualizing and getting the two areas of the brain to communicate to each other.

THE EXHIBITION

As you are aware your child will be participating in the Y6 Exhibition this year. This is an extended in-depth, collaborative project where students conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems. It will be happening over the course of 8 weeks with the culmination of it being shared with the whole school community.

This is a great learning experience for the students to demonstrate everything they know. There will be a parent workshop giving you information on how you can support your child with their Inquiry. Please watch out for the date of this in upcoming newsletters.

Well done to the KJS Y6 mixed  basketball team last week who were crowned RCHK Mixed Basketball Cup Champions. Each member of the team played really well and the team were unbeaten throughout the entire competition. Way to go KJS!

OTHER NOTES:

Raffle tickets are being sold and we are very impressed by the students’ motivation! There are prizes for the girl, the boy and the class who sell the most tickets. Please contact the PTA office should you need more raffle tickets to sell! If you have not returned yours yet please do so ASAP!

We would love any donations of outdoor/garden furniture, natural rope, bamboo, indoor/outdoor plants and pots, wood offcuts and wooden pallets for the Sky Garden.
