Yr6 Weekly Update – 06/09/17

Unit 6 – Who We Are

Central Idea:

Internal and external factors influence our well-being

We are inquiring into

  • Well-being (physical, emotional, social) FORM
  • Internal and external factors which influence my well-being CAUSATION
  • Strategies to develop resilience and independence RESPONSIBILITY

Students started the week by inquiring into what they thought “Well Being” meant. Then with a partner, they discussed their answers and co-constructed some new knowledge. We then discussed as a class and came up with a definition, we will use for the remainder of this unit.

Students will be inquiring into the different forms of well being. We will be focusing on social, emotional, and physical well being and we will be discussing their findings.

MATHS

Some classes have moved on to calculating and developing rules for determining volume of cubes and cuboids.  Students need to be able to identify and describe the relationships between area and volume, and between volume and capacity. Students will also learn how to calculate and develop rules for determining area and perimeter of triangles. Students will be reviewing fractions, measurement and shape.

BOOK WEEK

Thank you to Ms. Thomas for coming in to read to some of the Y6 classes this week. You are never too old for a read aloud and everyone enjoyed Elmer –  a story about an elephant who is just a little bit different.

The Y6’s were also fortunate to have an author visit from Matthew Cooper who read the story the Last Gibbon. This tied in perfectly with the end of the Exhibition and how we can all take action and make a difference.

On Wednesday afternoon the Y6’s paired up with the Y3’s and read stories to each other. It was great to see the older students being such good role models for the Y3’s.

Friday was the Book Character Parade. The Y6’s were encouraged to be creative and design their own costume or come as Elmer from the story we read at the beginning of the week.
