Yr5 Weekly Update – 26/8/16

Year Five Weekly update: week ending 26.8.’16

We have continued getting to know each other this week and the students have been working on a variety of collaborative activities to help them find out more about their new classmates including making a team pet and creating the lettering for our welcome sign. We have also reviewed the Learner Profile attributes and Attitudes, discussing their meanings and making personal connections to them.

In Literacy we have been assessing the students’ reading and they have been thinking about the creative writing process, writing poems about themselves, considering who their possible audience might be for their writing and making connections in their response to the stories we have read.

In Maths we have reviewed what the students already understand about place value and they have thoroughly enjoyed playing the place value games using their knowledge to make the highest or lowest number. Some have challenged themselves by making six digit numbers. In addition to the place value work, the students have also collected data about their classmates using questions such as ‘which Disney character would you like as your best friend?’ or ‘what chores do you do at home?’ There have been some interesting results which the students presented as graphs showing their current level of understanding of data handling.

A reminder that the students from 4M and 4MC who should have gone to the dentist last term will be going on Thursday 1st September, you received a letter reminding you this week.

Please remember school is closed to students on Monday 29th August as this is your opportunity to meet with us individually to tell us about your child. If you have not already done so, please check Gateway to book your time slot. We are looking forward to meeting you all!

Kind regards,

The Year Five Team
