Yr4 Weekly Update – 03/03/17

Our Unit on How We Express Ourselves is developing nicely. As the children go through the creative cycle a number of times, they are really developing their skills of viewing and synthesis. The risk taking and creativity that they are showing is coming out in their artwork of course, but also in the way they are tackling other areas such as a writing and maths problem solving. The PYP promotes a concept-based programme precisely so that learning and understanding gained in one area can be applied in many others.

This week students have been creating ‘skeletons’ of natural forms using a rolled paper technique. As with all of the making techniques that children have been shown, this is something that can be easily repeated at home with common household and recycled materials. Ask your children for a tutorial!

Literacy

This week, children had the chance to show teachers what they can do in an unaided writing task. We have also continued to do our ‘slow writing’ focusing on creating high quality sentences. We are writing to entertain, so getting feedback on how entertaining our writing is has been important. We have used each other as an audience and practiced how to act on the feedback we get.

Maths

This was the last week for our unit on fractions. Children completed assessment tasks and we will move on to looking at pattern and function next week. Fractions is a difficult concept for some children to achieve mastery with so we will revisit this in our maths maintenance to ensure it stays current.

Home Learning

Keep reading! What books are your favourite to read with the family at the moment?

MyMaths is proving a hit with children for reinforcing those skills and concepts learned in school.

Ask your child to teach you one of the 3D art techniques they have learned.
