Yr6 Weekly Update – 06/16/17

Who We Are

Central Idea:

Internal and external factors influence our well-being

We are inquiring into

  • Well-being (physical, emotional, social) – FORM
  • Internal and external factors which influence well-being – CAUSATION
  • Strategies to develop resilience and independence – RESPONSIBILITY

During this unit we will be looking at the skills of self management and informed choices as well as the skill of accepting responsibility. This week we inquired into the internal and external factors that affect our well being. Students came up with many different ideas for each.  External factors such as but are not limited to, body image, stereotypes, self-awareness, culture, gender identify, peer influence, and social media. Internal factors such as, body growth, skin changes, and increased intensity of feelings.

Students read several statements referring to internal and external factors associated with wellbeing such as, “Teenagers stay up late because they require less sleep than adults”, and then sorted them into factors the students thought were internal and external.

For literacy, students have read a few different articles about how to train your brain to focus and the downside of social media and being addicted to our devices.  Students are practicing their summarizing and synthesizing skills as well as having a lot of interesting discussions about the subject material.

MATHS

Students will be identifying and describing the properties of square and triangular numbers and trying to use algebraic expressions to record the rules for patterns. Students will also be locating and recording  features on a grid using coordinates in all four quadrants. We will also be discussing time across different time zones and how to calculate them as well as solving problems involving the difference in time.

LEAVERS CELEBRATION

Y6 only have a few weeks left here at KJS before they make the big move to secondary school.  We will be hosting a Y6 Leavers’ Celebration on June 28th. There will be certificates, food, music and dancing. Dress code for the evening is smart casual. Just a reminder that this is a family event and the expectation is that parents stay with their children for the evening.
