Yr6 Weekly Update – 06/23/17

Who We Are

Central Idea:  Internal and external factors influence our well-being

We are inquiring into

  • Well-being (physical, emotional, social) FORM
  • Internal and external factors which influence my well-being CAUSATION
  • Strategies to develop resilience and independence RESPONSIBILITY

This week the students moved on to discussing different strategies to help solve problems and help them to develop resilience and independence.

Students brainstormed ideas about conflicts or problems that they wanted to explore. They then got into groups to discuss the problem, plan how to put it into a dramatic scene. Students then improvised and role-played the different conflicts. Students tested multiple solutions to the problem, and the class audience members helped to suggest different resolutions. As a class we created an anchor chart for strategies to help us in different situations.

Students also inquired further into their physical well being by looking at a sugar chart to determine where sugar is hiding in our diet. We also discussed how much sleep and exercise is needed for their age group to help keep up their well being. Discuss this with your child at home.

Students also participated in a Yoga session this week provided by Hersha Chellaram. Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves.

MATHS

Students are inquiring into describing and ordering probability using fractions, decimals and percentages.

Students will also be required to explain why the theoretical probability of an event might differ from experimental probability through conducting a chance experiment.

Y6 Party Day

The Y6 party day is next Thursday 29th June. The day will be at school with different activities chosen by the students. For lunch the students will have a shared lunch in each class. Each class will discuss which food they would like for their room taking ALL allergies into consideration – there should be no nuts or food cooked in nut oil, shellfish, fava beans or broad beans. To minimise waste each child will be asked to bring enough food for approximately 6 students. You will be informed as to what food your child should bring in. Students will also need to bring in their own plate, cutlery, and spoon for an ice cream dessert. For dessert students will be given vanilla ice cream with a variety of toppings. If you would prefer your child to bring in their own lunch that is fine. Deli-Fresh has been cancelled for this date. Students will dress in casual clothes for the day.
