Dear KJS Families,

I trust that you all had an energising and enjoyable CNY break despite the challenging circumstances. I have been highly encouraged by our students’ enthusiasm and engagement level in general in the sessions that I have visited this week. It’s clear to me that our students love connecting with their teachers, EAs, and peers, whether it be on Zoom or in-person. While we are all looking forward to returning to in-person learning at the soonest possible opportunity, we are committed to providing the best learning experience we can for our students during this distance learning period. To further inform our current distance learning approach and practices, we will be reaching out to families, teachers, EAs, and students to garner feedback in the near future. We will send the family survey via the ESF App so please look out for it within the next two weeks.

The CNY edition of the KJS Times is a shining example of transfer of learning at KJS. The KJS Times encompasses all facets of the trajectory of learning, from facts to a deeper understanding of and through concepts to the application of learning in an authentic newspaper context. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to click on the blue link at the beginning of this paragraph and take a few minutes to engage with and celebrate our students’ learning.

On the topic of celebrations, you will find more details in this newsletter about or planned Book Month coming up in March. In an attempt to create and provide more connected experiences for our students during distance learning, we have decided to extend Book Week to almost a month. The incredible power that reading, writing, stories, and language in general possess more than justifies this exciting and enriching event. We hope that you feel the same way and will sign up to share your love of books and language with us.

Kind regards,

Dr Jamie Schmitz

Acting Principal

Dear Parents,

Happy Chinese New Year!

This year, Book Week will be extended to a month with the theme of “One World, Many Stories”, a focus on mother tongue (translanguaging), diversity and inclusion. We know students love to hear stories, especially in their home language, and we need your help!

We are looking for Parent Volunteers to be our Mother Tongue Reader!

You only need to volunteer for 15 minutes of your time and read a story. Mother tongue (home language) stories will be read at lunchtime (12:45-13:00) via Zoom.

Please help us by filling in the following form and our library team will get back to you on the confirmed date and with Zoom details. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Lau at macy.lau@kjs.edu.hk.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Kind regards,

Library Team
